About This Site

Pickleball Paddles Spot is written by Dennis Mercado, a retired electrician who took up pickleball after he closed his shop and now plays open play most weekday mornings. He writes about the gear he actually carries to the court: his paddle, the outdoor balls he buys by the dozen, his court shoes, his sling bag and the pickup tube he uses for drilling. Everything here comes from his own games, not from a lab or a sponsor.

Court Safety

Pickleball is a real sport, and most injuries come from moving, not from the gear. Warm up before you play, and never back-pedal for a lob: turn and run, because falling backward onto a hard court is one of the most common ways players get hurt. Wear court shoes with a rubber sole made for side-to-side movement, not running shoes, and keep your laces tied.

Outdoor balls are hard plastic and can bruise or injure an eye at close range at the kitchen line. Many players wear protective eyewear for that reason. Keep loose balls off the court during play so nobody steps on one and rolls an ankle, and pick them up between points.

Drink water and take shade breaks on hot days, especially in summer morning and midday sessions. If you have heart, joint, back or balance concerns, or ongoing elbow, shoulder or knee pain, talk to your doctor before you play or change gear. Nothing on this site is medical advice, and no paddle, shoe or accessory treats or prevents an injury.
